- The Level Design Concept of My Map
In my level,
most of the playtesters love how straightforward my level was. It was simple
and easy and they knew exactly where to go. Some of them liked the color scheme
of the map where the platforms that the player is supposed to jump on is orange
and most of the walls, floors, and other areas are white. Some of them also
liked the placement of my platforms. There was a bit of difficulty at first
trying to jump on the platforms but it didn’t reach a level of difficulty where
it started to become too difficult to complete them.
All my playtesters had a
complaint about the camera angle that I decided to set on the character. The
camera angle on my character was a bit low which made players unable to see
which platform they could jump on at times. They also did not like the fact
that there was no checkpoint system or restart system in the map. Once the
players fail to jump on a certain platform they had to manually quit the game
and get back into it to restart. One playtesters did not like how I added
stairs to the start of the level because they were difficult to climb onto and
it caused them to fall off the map a couple of times.
Some of them also did not
like the difficulty in the first obstacle course that I made for them. It was simple
at the beginning but then at the end it will eventually get more difficult for
the players to jump on the platform. One player also got stuck on one of the
platforms transitioning to the second obstacle course. This was due because
they were hugging the wall as they kept moving forward which caused them to fall
in a little gap between the platform and the wall.
I plan to add a checkpoint
system next time in my level as well to restart the level without having to
manually exit of the game and re-enter it again. I also plan to create a new
starting area for the players so they could have an easy time getting introduced
to the level without having to worry about falling off the stairs. For most of
my playtesters they found the map to be easy and simple but they did state that
I should re-adjust the camera angle so the players could see what platform they
are jumping to next ahead of them. All the players knew what path they had to
take to get to the end of my level thanks to the color scheme of my map.
The
overall flow of my map is that the players had to follow the orange platforms to
reach the endpoint of my map. Some of them also like the AI I have implemented
in my map which serves as markers for the players and letting them know where
they are supposed to go. They have gotten the idea that they knew that they
have beaten the level once they have reached the pink platform at the center of
the map.
The map felt linear to the players as they were going through it since
they did not have a lot of options to go anywhere else on the map. The only
place that felt open to them was the area in which you fall in when you fail to
jump on a platform. One player also suggested to add another wall at the
entrance of the map next time because it was possible for the players to fall
off a simple platform and land at the beginning area once again.
