Cooking Zero to Hero

Hello and welcome to our game Cooking Zero to Hero! This game was created by Group 8 which included myself of course and Sean. The game is about learning about the recipes provided in the game and mixing and matching the ingredients on the board to make some famous cuisines. You play against other players to determine who is the most knowledgeable when it comes to remembering the recipes and organizing the ingredients from the recipes to determine who is the master chef in the game. The game is intended to be played by women who are at the age of 30-40 and are also interested in cuisines.

When it came to the handling the tasks within the group we did a decent job on it. Since Sean was the one that came up with the idea he was mostly coming up with some new game mechanics for the game and how the structure of the board should be built. My tasks were to ensure that he did not go overboard with some ideas and to polish some of the game mechanics that doesn’t look like it would work out in the game. The only task that we failed to accomplish was to playtest the game together. This made the players notice the obvious flaws of the game which is that we had too many optional cards and that the pacing of the game was too slow and frustrating because we had too many recipes and too many ingredients that weren’t use at all in the game because wasn’t too common in recipes. We also had one complaint that there were too many free spaces on the board but the rest of the other players seemed to not mind at all.

^ Our Second Playtest Session ^

After our first playtest session we immediately went to modifying the game and fix the issues that the players had trouble with. We lowered the number of ingredients so that way they won’t pop up too frequently during the game. We also modified the recipes so that way the recipes are easier to find and the ingredients within them. We also managed our time well this time and decided to playtest the game to see the improvements that we made to the game were good. We also did a playtest on how the game was before to understand the frustrations that the players had to see if we could spot any other obvious mistakes. When we play tested the game we realized the most obvious mistake that we could have fixed if we just managed our time well.

As me and Sean go our separate ways to move on to our new groups we both realized how important managing your time is when it comes to making playtest sessions. If we managed our time wisely and play tested the game before the playtest session with random people we felt that the game could have been more enjoyable because the players could have spotted the little errors and mistakes we had in the game. I plan to have more communication with my new group member because I was lacking that during the development process. I also plan to make sure that I constantly keep in communication with my group member when it comes to the development process so that way both of us will be well informed of the process of the game. I also would like to focus more time on brainstorming since we went through it quickly.
