Story Project 1

For this project I needed to create a story board idea and convert it into a Animatic. However, the whole point of this project is to understand the steps that need to be taken that many people working in the animation industry have to deal with. They first have to present their idea to the group and then illustrate it to further prove your point.

My story idea that I decided to go with is called Anger Management. The story is about a bomb named Wallace with a bad temper who has to deal with his everyday and the people in it. He keeps doing favors for people so they would eventually leave him alone to his work but in the end he didn't manage to turn in his work on time causing him to explode right in front of his boss.

No worries! He did not die! In fact by releasing his anger in front of the boss he manages to scare him and force him to accept his project.

Anger Management- Animatic

I would love to say that this was the funnest part of the project because now you get to add sound effects either online or with your own voice which really brings your art to life!

I could definitely see however how some people could struggle with this. I worked on this Animatic in Photoshop using the timeline and let me tell you it could be annoying at times. A tip that I would recommend is to always put your sound effects in different layers. Photoshop has this weird function where if you insert a sound on the same layer of another sound it gets placed next to it.

Try moving it around to the other side and it pushes the sound effect which could be a real pain if your aiming for the perfect moment for your sound to pop up on one of your storyboards.

Anger Management- Storyboard

This is the hardest part of the project because you have to be prepared for your storyboard to be tweaked a bit or just completely scrapped. A tip that is suggested is to not worry too much on making it look pretty, just get your point across.

That was one problem that I had because although the art was good there was a bunch of changes I had to make which really took a lot of my time.

I also suggest just putting a bunch of your storyboards on separate layers but with one default storyboard template. It will save a lot of time converting those into images to transfer into your power point.

Anger Management- Beat Board

Think of this step as doing a storyboard but a simplified version of it. The problems that I ever really encountered during this project is figuring out what is considered a important scene in your animation.

My thinking process was starting with the beginning and end first so you know what your starting/ending point is.

Then after that just slowly work your way to the end. You may have to re-do some boards just to get the right pacing for it.

Anger Management- Character Construction and Modeling Sheets

Constructing your character is also really fun because now you spend time imagining how your character is going to look like in the animation.

For the character construction I had no problems but just figuring out how big my character was going to be. The solution that I went with was making him small so he is able to use daily equipment like chairs, tables, or electronics.

I decided to go with some simple poses for my character instead of some complicated ones because I consider myself to be a bad drawer.

I drew poses of Wallace sitting down, stretching, walking, and getting angry because those are the most likely poses to ever show up in my storyboards. I try to aim for different angles in his poses too so I could better picture on how he is going to look like when he turn around.

Anger Management- Script

During the scripting process I had a hard time coming up with scenarios and trying to pace them so they could add up to a minute.

A solution that I have come to is that just assume that every line that you make would be on a average 2 seconds. Then once your done go to the story board process and use the script as a reference.

Do not exactly go along with the script. Just follow it until you reach a point where you realize that you don't have enough time to add in a certain part of your script or need more. That way you could make edits to your script to meet the one minute requirement for the assignment.

Anger Management- Story Sheet

The story sheet is fun but also frustrating at the same time. On one part you are now creating a story from your idea and bringing it to life. On the other hand now you have to provide a detailed description of it so it would make sense to whoever is reading it.

One problem that I had was figuring out what I would put in my environment. I did not know how many objects I was going to have in it or which one is going to be key in the story.

The solution that I had was to just put in the necessary props for the environment. For example, a office space is going to need a computer, desk, and a chair. My character is going to be a bomb so I made sure to include that reference in the story sheet too.
